Why Chamonix is the place to be in the Alps in 2019
If you're into skiing, you'll have heard all about Chamonix. It's one of the most famous resorts in the French Alps, and it attracts over five million visitors every year. That's a lot of people. And, of course, there's a reason for its popularity. Chamonix doesn't just provide unrivalled access to Europe's best ski slopes (though it does do that!). The resort also offers almost any winter or summer sports you can think of (including extreme ones), an après ski scene that ranges from the liveliest of nightclubs to gourmet restaurants, great facilities for kids and seriously gorgeous scenery. Oh - and a range of property to suit all pockets.
Let's assume you already know Chamonix. And, because you know Chamonix, we can also safely assume you love it. You probably return to the resort year after year. You may be a skier, a snowboarder, or a fan of any one of the hundreds of activities that are on offer there. Or perhaps you simply love the scenery and fresh, clean air of the Alps. Or the food. Or the history and genuine Savoyard heritage. Or - well, you get the idea. Chamonix has everything. Of course, being such a popular place, it also has hotels, campsites, chalets, flats and apartments to rent. You've probably been using them for your holidays. And, why not? They're pretty good. But, if you really love Chamonix, wouldn't it make sense to take the next step and buy your very own base in the town?
Many people argue that buying holiday property abroad limits them to holidaying in the same place all the time. But, when it comes to Chamonix, the argument doesn't really hold up. Winter and summer sports fans actively choose to head to their chosen resort time after time because they know it is, quite simply, the best. They don't want to mess around wasting time getting from the resort to the slopes, when Chamonix has all the lifts they want within walking distance of their accommodation. They don't want to spend half their holiday getting to their resort either. Chamonix is so well established it's got great road, rail and air links. Families know that in Chamonix, they can enjoy family time on and off the pistes, but also find ski schools, crèches and even babysitters so they can also enjoy those grown-ups only times.
There's a downside to popularity, however. In peak times, in both winter and summer, the good rental accommodation and the best places to stay in Chamonix can become booked up. So it's easy to see that buying property in Chamonix makes sense. No disappointment when you try to book, no wondering if your unknown resort will offer the facilities you need, or the atmosphere you are hoping to find.
It's true that Chamonix property has something of a reputation for being on the expensive side. As one of the Alps' most desirable locations, that's only to be expected. You might think you can't afford it. But look again. Chamonix in 2019 has adapted to the needs of the times. Yes, there are still swish apartments and those "to die for" chalets on the market. And if you've got plenty of cash in the bank, Chamonix is the perfect place to find a luxury property. But these days, you'll also find some great properties that are affordable for those with less elastic resources.
Chamonix property is truly varied too. The resort is actually an historic Savoyard village, so traditional properties abound, but popularity and demand has brought about the addition of modern properties and developments too. You might choose an apartment in a charming period building in the centre of town, or you could push the boat out and pick a luxury chalet with views of Mont Blanc. If the budget is a little tight, how about studio apartments? Chamonix has all these and everything in between. Those who have interests other than skiing might choose property on an exciting new golf development, for example. It might be a cliché, but Chamonix really does have something for everyone.
Whether you are planning to spend a lot or a little on your property in the Alps, you will want to make a sound investment. And that's where Chamonix really comes into its own. The location of the resort, its fabulous facilities, longstanding reputation and inherent charm means that investing in Chamonix property is always a good idea. Alpine property in good resorts has bucked the trend in recent tough economic times and held its value well, even making gains in many instances.
It's about more than the capital value of the property in Chamonix. Property owners can also generate a very useful income though renting out their properties. According to the Telegraph, ski tourism has increased by 5% over the last decade. And because the tourist season in Chamonix (unlike many less well established resorts) extends throughout the year, you can choose to use your property whenever you want to and rent it out when it suits you. Whichever way you look at it, buying property in Chamonix is a great idea.
